The goal of culture is not to include everyone, but to bring together those who see the world in a similar way. It draws boundaries… yes, but not to divide, rather to define. It gives people something to belong to.
Every piece of work you create will, in its final form, generate its own culture. Like an office with its inside jokes and unspoken rules, culture forms around shared purpose. It belongs to a specific group of people with specific goals and interests. It is not meant for everyone and neither is your work.
It is more of a feature than a limitation. Culture thrives on distinction. When you create, you give people a language to gather around, a phrase that says ,“this is who we are!”
You can choose not to participate. But… should you decide to be part of it or even to help create it… what you do becomes more than I.
